Watch the independent review
The Golf Estate has never been one of the brighter stars in the Volkswagen firmament. It was always too small, too overshadowed by the hatch or too dowdy to really appeal. While this Mk 7 version isn't about to outshine the hatchback version, it at least addresses these other two issues reasonably well. It's usefully spacious and the styling is agreeably sleek. The rest of the news is good too. Small estates will never be big sellers but, as Volkswagen has demonstrated, if a job's worth doing, it's worth doing well.

New Volkswagen Golf Estate Features
Practical, comfortable, refined — just a few words to describe the new Volkswagen Golf Estate. The car’s key features include:
A comfortable ride
The new Volkswagen Golf Estate keeps the driver’s comfort in mind.
Take the car’s 5.8-inch touchscreen dashboard, for example. By cutting down on the number of buttons to operate the radio, sat-nav and the like, getting your technology set up is a breeze.
Once you are ready to begin a journey, you will notice that the new Golf Estate is incredibly agile, with lots of grip available through corners.
Plenty of storage space available
The new Volkswagen Golf Estate measures in at 4,562mm — that’s 307mm longer than the new Golf hatchback.
As a result of this increased size, even four six-foot-tall adults will be able to sit comfortably in this car.
As for storage capacity, the new Golf Estate offers 605 litres of space in the boot with the rear seats upright. Knock those seats down and the maximum capacity shoots up to a huge 1,620 litres.
