In terms of pick-up trucks in the UK, there are only a small number of options. With the Volkswagen Amarok and Mitsubishi L200, you have two of the more popular models on the market.
With premium quality in mind, you have to look at the Amarok first and foremost. As with other Volkswagen vehicles, the Amarok is built with customer comfort and reliability in mind. With car-like comfort inside with leather seats and ergonomic design, and class-leading load area and low sill height for easy loading it already has more to offer than the L200.
The Amarok is roomier inside too, particularly as all Amaroks come with a four-seat double cab rather than the single cab and awkward 2+2 'Club' cab of the L200.
Across the L200 range, Mitsubishi uses 2.4 and 2.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engines, while the Amarok uses a 2-litre four-cylinder TDI with two different power outputs. Despite the gulf in engine sizes, the Volkswagen engines are no less powerful and produce comparable torque figures.
This means that when it comes to payload weights, the two are broadly similar, with all models able to carry roughly a tonne. However all Amaroks are rated to tow 3000kg, whereas entry level L200s are only rated to 2700kg.
The Amarok really comes into its own when it comes to personalisation though. With multiple areas of the vehicle to customise, such as the infotainment system, interior design features and cab options, the Amarok can be made into your own perfect pickup.
