Towing can be incredibly useful as, despite Volkswagen vans' already ample storage space, it's always a boon to be able to take more with you, just in case.
However, it has been found that many van drivers don't know what their van and trailer's maximum load capacity is, meaning could be driving over the maximum limit and putting other road users at risk.
In a survey by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, 53 per cent of respondents were unaware how much they could carry. This is a worrying stat, given that of the 10,800 vans stopped by the Driver and Vehicle Standard Agency in 2015, 89 per cent were overladen with cargo, it is time that this trend is addressed.
In an attempt to ensure British roads are safer, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is urging business owners and British drivers to research their desired vehicle’s capacity and also how much they can tow along with it. With a full UK driving licence, anyone can drive with up to 3.5 tonnes of Gross Vehicle Weight, but with the addition of a trailer, the law becomes more complicated, as regulations differ depending on when you passed your driving test.
If you passed from January 19th 2013, you can take a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of 3.5 tonnes including 750kg in a small trailer, or more than 750kg in a large trailer as long as you don't exceed 3.5 tonnes along with your van and trailer combined.
Before that you can driver a van with a 3.5 tonnes load plus a 750kg trailer, but if you want to pull anything heavier, you need to take a car and trailer test. At VW Commercial Vehicles, we advise you on which van and trailer combination is best for you in accordance with our 'Working with You' promise.
