Europe’s independent consumer protection organisation, Euro NCAP has awarded the new Passat the maximum five star rating.

NCAP awards Passat top marks

This means the eight generation of the Passat can claim to be one of the world’s safest cars – the same honour which was bestowed upon the outgoing Passat model in 2010.

Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) has been seen as the benchmark in vehicle safety since 1997 – the requirements were tightened this year, making this achievement particularly impressive for the Passat.

This impressive result was due to a world-class security package including optimised body structure, a highly effective integrated seat belt and air system alongside innovative assistance systems.

The overall safety rating of five stars for the new Passat is made up of the results in four separate categories; occupant protection for adults and children, pedestrian protection and security support.

Extensive investigations on occupant protection for adults including a head-on crash test against an aluminium barrier as well as a side impact and a pole side impact – the Passat received 85 per cent of the maximum rating.

The new Passat also performed brilliantly in the important area of child protection and reach over 87 per cent of the maximum point total due to the standard ISOFIX and top tether child seat anchors.

Additionally, constructive details of the pedestrian protection in the new Passat were graded – these significantly reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians – these include, for example, the engineering of the bumper and the bonnet.

Other safety systems also checked as part of the Euro NCAP assessment included the safety-optimised head restraints, which minimise the risk of neck injuries in a rear-end collision and seat belt warning systems for all seats.

The “Front Assist” surroundings monitoring system including the City Emergency Braking, which is available from the Comfortline trim upwards and was incorporated in the safety systems category also received top marks.

Significant amounts of safety equipment has been included on the new Passat including driver and front passenger airbags and a head airbag system for front and rear passengers including side airbags.

Prices for the new Volkswagen Passat start at £22,215.
