VW Golf GTI Clubsport S Goodwood

The Golf GTI has become a motoring icon after many years of being the most reliable and best sports hatchback on the market.

Thanks to this continued popularity in the general public, the Golf GTI has now reached its 40th year in production and to celebrate the model’s landmark year, Volkswagen took an original MkI GTI racing car and the new GTI Clubsport S to the Goodwood Festival of Speed to display how the model has developed over its history.

During the car’s evolution, the design has only changed when needed and from the original MkI GTI, the sporty performance has been maintained. With the increase in efficiency and power, the GTI has also gained in comfort and style.

The MkI GTI displayed at the Festival was a 222PS racing version of the compact car and was driven up the famous Goodwood hill climb by legendary racing driver Hans-Joachim Stuck, whilst the GTI Clubsport S – which is comparable to the current VW Polo WRC rally car in terms of performance – was driven by current VW rally driver Jari-Matti Latvala.

Both were able to show off the superb attributes that have made the Golf GTI one of the most recognisable models in motoring.
